The Voice of Los Feliz (podcast) Episode 3

Civic Engagement and Community Involvement.
1

Coming to you two days later than we planned, jumbo-sized Episode 3 picks up on themes host Phil Leirness explored in his essay “Getting Involved”. Join Phil, his trusty announcer Marc Hershon, and his brilliant musical director Jon Lawlor, as they take you to the House of Pies, Figaro Bistrot, Barnsdall Art Park and the Hollywood Sikh Temple for conversations with four of the most active members of the Los Feliz community.

The festivities get underway with Phil offering a preview of the second “Viva Los Feliz” show. It takes place on the night of October 30 at the Autry. Tickets are free and first come first serve. For more information, visit https://www.lfia.org/events/viva-los-feliz-haunted/.

Mike Hain has been “doing good in the neighborhood” for many years. From his work as chairman of the LFNC Public Health & Safety Committee, to the neighborhood cleanups he conducts with his “Trashbusters” crew, from educating about first aid, to teaching workplace safety protocols, it all gets discussed at the House of Pies. You will get much better acquainted with this wonderful man and you will even hear a song about him performed by local band The Love-Inns!

Phil checks in with Brian Morrison to discuss the success of the recent Disney Bros. Cartoon Studio Square Dedication and Block Party, and to preview the forthcoming neighborhood Porchfest (taking place November 2-3). Their discussion lasts just long enough for them to enjoy happy hour martinis at Figaro.

At Barnsdall Art Park overlooking Los Feliz, Phil gets together with his District Representative to the Los Feliz Neighborhood Council Governing Board, Melody King. Melody explains the issues pertaining to public safety, housing, traffic and parking that are of greatest concern to her. She also shares about her work with Los Feliz Animal Rescue and as host of the KPFK radio show “The Animal Agenda”.

Finally, Phil sits down with Duncan Sachdeva to discuss the historic, cultural and personal significance of The Hollywood Sikh Temple and the tenets of Sikhism. The conversation that ensues is both wide-ranging and truly moving. You will learn about Duncan’s personal journey from India to Los Feliz, about his faith, about his profound devotion to his community, about his love of photography and his love of cinema.
